The "Kae" series coins were minted by the Hojo (Board of Revenue) during a period when Joseon's copper cash supply was chronically mismanaged — private counterfeiting was so widespread by the 1740s that authorities struggled to maintain any meaningful distinction between official and illicit issues. The "Earth" designation in the series follows the Five Elements sequence used to differentiate issues from concurrent minting operations, a bureaucratic solution to tracking output across multiple furnaces rather than a meaningful denominational marker.
