| Obverse description | Cast copper cash-type coin featuring a central square perforation surrounded by four Chinese characters in traditional regular script (kaishu), arranged in cruciform fashion reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang), 通 (Tong), 寶 (Bo), 平 (Pyong), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong T'ongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Circulating Treasure.' The characters are rendered in bold, slightly worn relief against a flat, patinated field. A raised inner rim frames the square hole, and a broad outer rim encircles the entire design. The surface displays a characteristic blue-green and brown patina consistent with aged cast copper. |
