Obverse description Round cast bronze coin with a central square hole, characteristic of East Asian cash coinage. Four Chinese characters are arranged in cruciform fashion around the square central perforation, read top-to-bottom and right-to-left: 常平通寶 (Sang Pyeong Tong Bo), meaning 'Ever-Constant Circulating Treasure.' The legends are rendered in regular script (kaishu) and stand in moderate relief against a flat field. A plain raised rim encircles the outer edge of the coin.
