Obverse description Cast copper cash coin with a central square perforation. The obverse bears four Chinese characters arranged in cruciform around the central hole, reading clockwise from the top: 常 (Sang), 通 (Tong), 平 (Pyong), 寶 (Bo), together forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong T'ongbo), the standard inscription of the Joseon dynasty's Sangpyong Ch'ongch'oguk monetary system. The character 通 appears in a variant form with the top stroke rendered as コ (or alternatively マ or 々), a diagnostically significant detail for die variety attribution. Characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) within a plain, unadorned field.
