| Obverse description | Four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform pattern around a central square hole. Reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang) and 平 (Pyong) on the vertical axis, and 通 (Tong) and 寶 (Bo) on the horizontal axis, forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Currency' — the standard inscription of the Joseon Dynasty's Sangpyeong Treasury coinage. Characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) style within a plain raised rim. |
