| Obverse description | Cast round coin with a central square hole. The obverse bears four Chinese ideograms arranged in cruciform fashion around the central square perforation: 常平 (Sangpyeong), read top to bottom, identifying the Sangpyeong Office (a financial bureau of the Joseon Dynasty responsible for currency issuance), and 通寶 (Tongbo), read right to left, meaning 'current currency' or 'circulating treasure.' The characters are rendered in regular script (kaishu) style within an unadorned field. |
