Obverse description Central square hole flanked on four sides by Chinese characters in classical script, reading clockwise from top: 常 (top), 通 (right), 平 (bottom), 寶 (left), forming the four-character legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyeong Tongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Currency,' the standard inscription of the Joseon dynasty's Sangpyeong Tongbo coinage. The characters are cast in relief within a plain, unadorned field typical of Korean Yi dynasty cash coins.
