| Obverse description | Four Chinese characters arranged around a central square perforation in the traditional cash coin format. Reading top to bottom and right to left, the inscription 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo) identifies the coin as currency of the Sangpyong (Ever-Normal) Treasury, the primary monetary authority of the Joseon Dynasty. The characters are rendered in regular script (楷書) within the four quadrants of the coin field, with 常 (sang) at the top, 平 (pyong) at the bottom, 通 (tong) at the right, and 寶 (bo) at the left. The raised characters stand in crisp relief against the plain field, typical of mid-eighteenth century Joseon cast coinage. |
