| Obverse description | Central square hole flanked by a four-character inscription arranged in cruciform fashion around it, reading clockwise from top: 常 (Sang), 寶 (Bo), 平 (Pyong), 通 (Tong), forming the legend 常平通寶 (Sangpyong T'ongbo), meaning 'Ever-Normal Circulating Treasure,' the standard currency inscription of the Joseon dynasty. The characters are rendered in regular script (楷書) and cast in relief against a flat field. The coin displays the typical Joseon cash-coin format, with a broad flat rim framing the design. |
