Saxe-Meiningen's 1900 pattern coinage was produced in anticipation of Georg II's reign being formally recognized within the imperial monetary framework, though the duke — better known across Europe as a pioneering theater director than as a political figure — never saw a circulation issue bearing his effigy materialize. The Duchy was among the smallest of the German states scrambling to assert minting privileges before the consolidation pressures of the Kaiserreich rendered such ambitions moot.
