Additional information

Issued to mark the golden wedding anniversary of Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, and Princess Louise of Prussia — daughter of Wilhelm I — this commemorative was struck in 1906, the same year Frederick died. He had reigned since 1856, making him one of the longest-serving German sovereigns of the nineteenth century and a consistent advocate for Prussian-led unification before it happened.

Baden's commemorative issues of this period were typically produced in modest quantities relative to circulation coinage, and the 1906 pieces saw little actual use.
