| Reverse description | A plain, unfinished central field characteristic of a trial or pattern piece, encircled by a continuous wreath of oak leaves and acorns rendered in fine relief, forming a closed ring around the entire field. The wreath is bound at the base and terminates symmetrically at each side. The design is contained within a beaded border, with no legends or inscriptions present, consistent with an incomplete or obverse-design-only pattern strike. |

The 2 Mark denomination was introduced as part of the sweeping monetary unification that followed the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, replacing a chaotic patchwork of state currencies. Pattern pieces from 1876 predate the standardized circulation strikes and were produced to test designs and dies before full production commitments were made — meaning this coin never passed through a single hand in ordinary commerce.
The Imperial Mint in Berlin struck multiple pattern variants during this period, and documented die differences exist between them.
