Comments

Nieheim is a small market town in the Teutoburg Forest region of Westphalia, and like hundreds of similar communities during the 1921 inflation spiral, its local credit cooperative — the Vorschußverein — issued emergency Kleingeld to plug the coin shortage that had become critical by that point. These cooperative-issued notgelds occupy an awkward category: neither municipal nor corporate, they were backed by the issuing institution's own creditworthiness, which varied enormously from town to town.

Nieheim's cooperative survived the inflation period, though the notes themselves almost certainly ceased to function as currency well before the Rentenmark stabilization of late 1923.
