Comments

Brakel is a small market town in the Teutoburger Wald, and its 1921 Notgeld issue reflects the acute small-change famine that plagued German provincial commerce in the early Weimar years. The Reichsbank's inability to supply adequate coinage in denominations useful for daily trade pushed hundreds of municipal authorities — including minor Kreisstadt administrations like the Magistrat here — to issue their own emergency paper.

The Kreis Höxter series is not among the more widely collected Westphalian Notgeld groups, which keeps prices modest even for cleaner examples.
