Jobst Edmund of Brabeck served as Prince-Bishop of Hildesheim from 1688 until his death in 1702, governing during the War of the Spanish Succession's opening pressures on northern German ecclesiastical territories. The Mariengroschen was a denominational unit deeply embedded in Lower Saxon currency practice, and Hildesheim's mint continued producing small silver for regional circulation well into the period when larger territorial powers were consolidating monetary control around it.
Mehl's Hild#668a designation places this among a tightly catalogued run of Brabeck issues — the 'a' suffix indicating a die variant within the 1700 production.
