Additional information

Ernest August's elevation to Elector of Hanover in 1692 — the ninth electorate of the Holy Roman Empire, created largely through his own persistent lobbying and a substantial payment to Emperor Leopold I — transformed Calenberg from a minor dynastic holding into a seat of genuine imperial rank. These small silver pieces circulated through that transition, issued across a reign defined more by political maneuvering than military achievement.

The Mariengroschen denomination was a north German regional standard, its value fixed at 1/36 of a Reichsthaler.
