Obverse description Crowned royal monogram of Charles I and Joanna (Carlos y Juana) rendered in Gothic style, centrally placed within the field. The intertwined letters are surmounted by a large royal crown. The surrounding circular legend reads CARO LVS ET IOANA REGIS, identifying the joint monarchs. The flan is irregular and slightly concave, characteristic of hammered colonial coinage. The overall execution is relatively crude, consistent with early New World mint production.
