Obverse description The obverse displays the Maria II countermark applied to the reverse face of the host 1 Macuta coin. The countermark consists of a crowned Portuguese royal shield, struck in the upper central field of the host coin. The host coin's own reverse design — featuring the Portuguese arms within an inner beaded circle, surrounded by the legend AFRICA PORTUGUEZA and the date 1785 — remains visible beneath and around the countermark impression. The denomination numeral '1' and the word MACUTA appear in the lower portion of the legend. The entire design is contained within a beaded border.
