Obverse description Central field dominated by the applied countermark of a crowned Portuguese royal shield, punched over the host coin's reverse legend area, partially obscuring the text 'MACUTA 1'. The host coin reverse bears a beaded inner circle enclosing the denomination inscription 'MA CU' (abbreviation of MACUTA) and the date 1789 at the top, surrounded by decorative floral or rosette ornaments at the cardinal points. The legend 'AFRICA PORTUGUEZA' runs around the outer border of the beaded circle. The countermark itself depicts a crowned shield bearing the Portuguese royal arms, applied with a hand punch, characteristic of the 1837 revalidation coinage of Angola.

Obverse lettering MARIA·I·D·G·REGINAE·PORT·ET·D·GUINEÆ·
Reverse description The host coin obverse features the crowned Portuguese royal coat of arms at center, an ornate shield bearing the quintas (five escutcheons) and castles of Portugal, surmounted by a royal crown. The circular legend 'MARIA·D·G·REGINA·PORT·ET·D·GUINEÆ·' runs around the periphery in Latin script, identifying Queen Maria I of Portugal. The arms are rendered in high relief with fine detail typical of late 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage, and the entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
