Obverse description Large armored bust of Francesco I d'Este, Duke of Modena, facing right, wearing plate armor and a lace collar, occupying most of the coin's field. A circular Latin legend runs around the periphery incorporating the ruler's titles and the date, with decorative star separators. The portrait is rendered in the bold, high-relief Baroque style typical of mid-seventeenth-century Italian coinage.
