San Marino issues coins annually in sets largely for collector sale rather than circulation, and 1988 was no exception — the republic's physical coinage rarely left the hands of dealers and hobbyists. The Arco della Fratta series that year honored architectural remnants of the medieval fortifications still standing in the historic center, which UNESCO would later recognize in 2008.
