Obverse description The arms of San Marino occupy the central field: an escutcheon bearing three towered castles on a horizontally lined ground, surmounted by a princely crown and flanked by a laurel branch to the left and an oak branch to the right, the two sprays tied at the base. A ribbon scroll below the shield bears the motto LIBERTAS in raised letters. The engraver's signature SPERANZA appears in small capitals at the very bottom of the field. The circular legend RESPVBLICA S. MARINI runs along the upper periphery within a beaded border.
