Bulgaria's first silver coinage under Ferdinand I was struck at the Kremnica Mint in Slovakia — then operating under Austro-Hungarian administration — because Bulgaria lacked its own minting facility. The 1894 date marks the early years of Ferdinand's princedom, before he declared full independence from Ottoman suzerainty in 1908 and elevated himself to Tsar.
