In 1981, Tbilisi Dinamo became the only Soviet club — and still the only Georgian club — to win a major UEFA competition, defeating Carl Zeiss Jena in the Cup Winners' Cup final in Düsseldorf. The squad was built almost entirely of Georgian players under coach Nodar Akhalkatsi, an unusual degree of regional cohesion for a Soviet top-flight side. This 2006 issue marks the 25th anniversary of that victory.
