Obverse description Central field occupied by a two-line Arabic inscription in raised relief, hand-struck on an irregular flan. The upper line reads 'Sultan Hasan' and the lower line reads 'Nur al-Din', identifying the reigning sultan of the Maldives. The script is in a bold, somewhat crude calligraphic style characteristic of Maldivian billon coinage of the late 18th century. The coin's irregular edge reflects its hammered manufacture, with the legends filling nearly the entire field.
