Lepoglava, a Dominican monastery-turned-prison in northern Croatia, issued its own scrip during the Axis-aligned Independent State of Croatia (NDH) period — a practical response to the difficulty of supplying state currency to a functioning penal labor economy. The Kazneni Zavod Lepoglava notes circulated exclusively within the institution, used by prisoners and staff for internal canteen transactions.

Josip Broz Tito had been imprisoned at Lepoglava in the early 1930s, well before this scrip was produced. The institution had a long history as a place of political detention.
