Norway dissolved its union with Sweden in June 1905, and the newly independent kingdom required coinage bearing the portrait of its chosen monarch — the Danish prince Carl, who took the name Haakon VII. Pattern strikes like this one preceded the authorized circulation series while the mint worked through competing design proposals. The 1907 date places this after Haakon's coronation at Nidaros Cathedral in June 1906, meaning the design program had already been running for over a year before this particular proposal was struck.
