Ferdinand II's aggressive re-Catholicization of Styria — which included expelling Protestant clergy and burning heretical books in Graz as early as 1599, decades before he became Holy Roman Emperor — gave his coinage a particular political charge. The small silver issues from the Graz mint in this period circulated through a province being forcibly reshaped, with the Thirty Years' War already grinding through its sixth year by the time this type's production ended.
The Graz mint operated under considerable pressure during these years, supplying coinage for military expenditure that was escalating well beyond imperial projections.
