Additional information

Charles Theodor inherited the Palatinate electorate in 1743 at age seventeen following the extinction of the Sulzbach line, and this billon issue belongs to the very opening years of his administration — a reign that would eventually stretch nearly six decades and embroil him in the Bavarian succession crisis of 1778. Billon coinage of this fractional denomination was workhouse currency, struck to meet everyday transaction demand in the Rhineland territories where silver was chronically scarce at the petty-change level.

The KM#310 attribution distinguishes this type from later Palatinate-Bavaria issues struck after Charles Theodor unified the two electorates in 1777.
