Tunisia's copper coinage of the 1850s occupies an awkward administrative position: struck under the Husainid beys as nominal vassals of the Ottoman Empire, these pieces carry dual authority — the reigning bey Muhammad II alongside Sultan Abdülmecid I in Constantinople. The countermark on this type was applied to validate earlier coin stock for continued circulation, a practical measure common in North African monetary administration when new issues were slow to reach provincial markets.
