Obverse description At center, the small National Emblem of Ukraine (trident) is displayed within a decorative wreath composed of stylized images of selected flora and fauna species. Surrounding the central emblem, a four-line Cyrillic legend in the field reads УКРАЇНА, 2 ГРИВНІ, and 1999, denoting the issuing country, denomination, and year of issue. The wreath motif reinforces the coin's nature-themed series context.

Additional information

Issued under Ukraine's "Fauna of Ukraine" program, which the National Bank launched in 1999 to draw attention to endangered and protected species native to the region. The steppe eagle (*Aquila nipalensis*) was already under significant pressure from agricultural expansion across the Pontic steppe by the time this coin was struck.

The Zahreba catalog reference reflects Vasyl Zahreba's specialized Ukrainian numismatic classification system, which runs parallel to the KM numbering and is the preferred reference among Ukrainian collectors for this series.
