Issued under Ukraine's "Fauna of Ukraine" program, which the National Bank launched in 1999 to draw attention to endangered and protected species native to the region. The steppe eagle (*Aquila nipalensis*) was already under significant pressure from agricultural expansion across the Pontic steppe by the time this coin was struck.
