Obverse description Within an ornamental wreath composed of stylized flora and fauna motifs, the small National Emblem of Ukraine (trident) is centrally positioned above the denomination. The surrounding legend in Cyrillic reads УКРАЇНА in the upper field, with the denomination 2 ГРИВНІ and the date 2003 arranged in the lower portion of the design. The mintmark of the National Bank of Ukraine Banknote Printing and Minting Works appears in the field.

Reverse description A detailed naturalistic depiction of the Black Sea seahorse (Hippocampus guttulatus microstephanus) occupies the central field, rendered in fine relief with carefully articulated body plates and fins. The Cyrillic inscription МОРСЬКИЙ КОНИК ЧОРНОМОРСЬКИЙ arcs around the upper portion of the design, identifying the subject in Ukrainian. The scientific binomial HIPPOCAMPUS GUTTULATUS MICROSTEPHANUS is inscribed in Latin characters along the lower periphery of the coin.
