Oleksii Pohorielov (1915–1976) was a Soviet-Ukrainian metallurgist whose research into special steels and alloys contributed directly to the industrial capacity of the Donbas region — a fact that carries a particular weight given the subsequent history of that territory. The National Bank of Ukraine's commemorative bimetallic and collector coin series has issued hundreds of such biographical pieces since the 1990s, with the 2 hryvni denomination used specifically for circulation-quality commemoratives intended to move through everyday commerce rather than sit in collector sets.
