Additional information

Ostrohradskyi spent most of his productive career in St. Petersburg — an inconvenient fact for a coin issued by an independent Ukraine reclaiming him as a national figure. The mathematician made foundational contributions to analytical mechanics and mathematical physics in the 1820s through 1860s, and his work on the divergence theorem predates the version commonly attributed to Gauss in Western literature.

This commemorative was part of Ukraine's early push to populate its coinage with figures the Soviet era had either suppressed or assigned to Russian cultural patrimony.
