Leonid Zhabotynskyi won back-to-back Olympic gold medals in weightlifting at Tokyo 1964 and Mexico City 1968, competing for the Soviet Union despite being Ukrainian by birth. He held the world record in the superheavyweight class multiple times and was broadly considered the dominant lifter of his generation. Ukraine has issued a number of commemorative coins honoring Soviet-era athletes retroactively claimed as national figures — a pattern that accelerated after independence and intensified following the political ruptures of the 2000s and 2010s.
