Kharkiv National Law Academy traces its origins to 1804, making it one of the oldest law schools in the former Russian Empire — founded the same year as Kharkiv University itself, from which it was eventually separated. The 2004 commemorative marks the institution's bicentennial. Ukraine issued dozens of similar academic anniversary coins throughout the 2000s, and this type circulated mainly as a collector piece rather than in everyday commerce.
