Additional information

Ukraine's Institute for Wine Growing and Making, based in Yalta, was established in 1828 under imperial Russian patronage and became one of the oldest viticultural research institutions in the former Soviet space. The Crimean wine industry it helped develop supplied tsarist court cellars and survived collectivization, though at considerable cost to varietal diversity. This coin appeared four years before the institute's 180th anniversary, part of a long-running Ukrainian commemorative program that systematically documented scientific and cultural institutions the newly independent state was claiming as its own national heritage.
