Additional information

Borys Hmyrya (1903–1969) was one of the Soviet Union's most celebrated bass singers, a Ukrainian whose career at the Kyiv Opera spanned decades but was nearly destroyed by his refusal to become an informant for the MGB. He survived that pressure, though not without consequences — his international touring was curtailed and he remained under intermittent surveillance until his death. This coin was issued in the centenary year of his birth.
