Obverse description Draped bust of Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg facing left, wearing a biretta, with the date rendered in Roman numerals divided on either side of the effigy. Three small heraldic shields of arms are interspersed within the encircling Latin legend, which identifies the sitter as Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg and Bishop of Gurk. The portrait is rendered in the bold, high-relief style characteristic of early sixteenth-century hammered coinage from the Salzburg mint.
