Obverse description Facing jugate busts of Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella, both elaborately attired in contemporary late-Renaissance court dress with prominent lace ruffs. Albert appears on the left in armour with a high collar, and Isabella on the right wearing a richly ornamented bodice and headdress. The busts are rendered in high relief in a bold, naturalistic hammered style characteristic of Southern Netherlandish goldsmithing of the early seventeenth century. The peripheral legend in Latin reads ALBERTVS · ET · ELISABET · DEI · GRA, partially inverted at the base of the coin in the typical fashion of this issue. The field around the busts is relatively plain, allowing the portraiture to dominate the composition.
