Obverse description Central device depicts the double-headed imperial eagle of Frankfurt with wings displayed, rendered in fine relief against a plain field; the eagle bears a decorative foliate ornament on its breast in place of an escutcheon. A circular legend surrounds the eagle along the periphery, bordered by a continuous beaded rim. The inscription commemorates the convening of the Constituent Assembly in the Free City of Frankfurt on 18 May 1848, with the date incorporated within the legend at the top of the coin.
