Reverse description The central field bears a four-line raised inscription naming Archduke Johann of Austria, arranged as ERZHERZOG / JOHANN / VON / OESTERREICH, set above a crossed laurel and palm branch motif at the lower portion of the field. The surrounding legend, reading ERWÄHLT ZUM REICHSVERWESER ÜBER DEUTSCHLAND D. 29 IUNI 1848, curves around the upper and lateral periphery, commemorating his election as Imperial Regent of Germany on 29 June 1848. The date 1848 appears inverted at the very base of the reverse, consistent with this piece's mule or pattern nature. The overall design is restrained and monumental in character.
