Poland's interwar bronze and brass coinage was authorized under the 1924 monetary reform that replaced the worthless Polish marka — by that point destroyed by postwar hyperinflation — with the new złoty. The 1923-dated pieces were struck in anticipation of that reform, giving the mint time to build adequate stock before the official currency changeover took effect.
