Obverse description Within a cusped inner circle of sixteen arches, a helmeted lion passant to the left, rendered in high relief in the Gothic style characteristic of Rhenish medieval coinage. The lion is depicted with elaborate detail including a crested helm above, the mane and body ornamented with stylized foliage, resting on a ground line. The surrounding circular legend, separated from the central device by a beaded border, reads WILHELMVS DEI GRA DVX Z DNS IVLIAC, identifying Duke Wilhelm II as lord of Jülich.
