Additional information

Stephen of Zuylen acquired the lordship of Anholt in 1365, and like many minor Netherlandish lords of the period, he exercised minting rights aggressively — partly as a revenue stream, partly as a declaration of jurisdictional independence from larger neighboring powers. The "Botdrager" type, named for the figure carrying a shield, was a common format among Low Countries lordships imitating Flemish groot coinage, and Anholt's version circulated well beyond its tiny territorial base.

Van der Chijs remains the foundational reference for this material, and catalogue numbers in this series are thinly documented — surviving specimens are rare enough that die studies have never been systematically undertaken.
