Obverse lettering IOHANES DI GA DX BABANTI ET LIMB
(Translation: John, by God`s grace duke of Brabant and Limburg)
Reverse description Central field displays a bold cross pattée extending to the inner beaded circle, dividing the field into four quarters each containing a heraldic symbol: the lion of Brabant in the upper left and lower right quarters, and the fleur-de-lis or eagle motif of Limburg in the remaining quarters. The cross is rendered with clean, raised lines characteristic of hammered billon coinage of the period. A beaded inner circle separates the quartered cross design from the outer circumferential legend. The surrounding legend in Gothic uncial lettering reads MONETA NOVA DVC BRABANTI ET LIMB, identifying this as the new coinage of the duchies of Brabant and Limburg.
