The Banque Nationale de la République d'Haïti's relationship with Thomas De La Rue stretched across several decades of the mid-twentieth century, and this 2 Gourdes note belongs to a series produced during the François Duvalier regime — a period when Haiti's monetary institutions operated under intense presidential pressure, with the central bank effectively subordinated to executive will. Duvalier had restructured the bank's governance in the early 1960s to consolidate control over foreign exchange and government financing.
The watermark is the sole security feature, modest even by the standards of the period.
