Christian IV struck gold kronen throughout a reign defined by military overreach. Denmark's disastrous intervention in the Thirty Years' War — driven largely by Christian's ambition to position himself as the defender of Protestant northern Europe — ended at the Battle of Lutter in 1626, where Imperial forces routed the Danish army and forced the humiliating Treaty of Lübeck in 1629. The crown's finances never fully recovered, and gold coinage from the later portion of this issue reflects a monarchy operating under sustained fiscal strain.
Fr#54 distinguishes this from the earlier 74.1 variety. The long date range across nearly three decades means dies and execution quality vary considerably across the run.
