Montoire-sur-le-Loir held a French officer POW depot during the First World War, and like many such camps, it developed its own internal scrip when standard currency became impractical for day-to-day transactions among prisoners. These camp issues were produced under German oversight but designed and often printed by the prisoners themselves — which accounts for the considerable variation in paper quality and typography across the series.
The Loir-et-Cher issues are among the lesser-documented French camp currencies of 1917, and surviving examples in any condition are infrequently traded.
