Obverse description Janiform conjoined busts of King Leopold I of Belgium and King Frederick William IV of Prussia facing left and right respectively, occupying the central field within a beaded inner circle. The effigies are rendered in high relief in a classical portrait style. Encircling the beaded border along the outer rim is the Latin legend SUB DUPLICI PRAESIDIO LIBERTAS, referencing the dual protection of the two sovereigns over the territory of Neutral Moresnet. The date 1848 appears prominently on the obverse, flanked by decorative stops.
